Injuries!
« on: December 12, 2011, 03:05:35 PM »

There are issues at the team with multiple injuries occuring every game and every training it seems, long lasting injuries and frequent injuries on the same players. This is the case for many teams and many players, not one that is isolated to Lazio. But. There is something I feel needs to be discussed, and that is the last of the points above; that we seem to get more players getting injured over and over again compared to many other teams. Mauri being played and picking up an injury prolonging his absence is only the last of examples. Look at Bizzarri, at Konko, at Matuzalem, at Radu and at ... . We have had the same issue going on for years now.

For those of you who have some more insight into football related injuries, those who know our medical staff well enough to comment on this, those of you who know Paideia. What is the main problem from your perspective?

Current list of injured players.
Berrardi, Bizzarri, Marchetti, Konko, Zauri, Dias, Biava, Garrido, Brocchi, Matuzalem, Mauri. To me, in that list, we have 7 starters. 7 players who would make Lazio better if they were only ready to play. It is too much. Which other team has 7 starters on their list of injured players!?

I know about things related to training, practicing, building up and eventually recovering from games, and the only conclusion I can draw from my perspective is that the team is not training in the right way, that there are flaws there. But what else? I struggle to understand why we, year in and year out, have to live with us picking up so many injuries all the time...

Europe is the reason.

Unlike Napoli we haven't rested players before or after EL matches. This has cost us badly.

I can't say that much about the quality of our medical staff but maybe they're not used to our players playing this much.

The most worrying is like you said, that Brocchi, Mauri & Matuzalem got injured again right after their comeback.

i dont think that europe is the reason,
even in past we ve got a lot of injurie players(some of them injuries after injuries/matuzalem,radu),
another point is that we do not use too many players for the games(and our list of players is to big...),
the another point is that we ve gotta a players more than 30-s and they dont have rest(brocchi for example),
and after all,an interesting question about our medical stuf,...?

You can't put them all in the same basket. For instance, Bizzari, Mauri, Garrido were injured when the season started. Another thing is that they are all (give it or take) 30+, which makes them more prone to injures. If a player was injured in the past, there are big chances to repeat that injury (Matuzalem, Radu).

Playing 3 games a week is a major reason if you ask me. The boys aren't that ready, plus as Phantomm mention we don't have enough depth.

However none of the above answers the question of the capability of our physio staff. Maybe I'm wrong but before Mauri was sent to a specialist in Germany he already had surgery here in Rome, which I suppose didn't went that well. Also if you are one of the Football Manager series addict, you will notice that Lazio has the worst physio staff in all game.

Despite all these injuries we still win most of our matches, how can we not have enough depth?

We're lucky to have so many players in our squad this season and most of them have proved that they are good enough.

agree with LofL, we have enough depth, but it is strange how many injuries we have every season. i bet on the physical preparation not being good enough

Just listened to the radio show (grazie Paolo, grazie blue-white) and the interview with Dr.Bianchini (?). Not a single comment on possible explanations to the injuries, not a comment on the fact that our players keep getting injured over and over again. Strange.

Yes, Europe puts pressure on the players but is that an excuse of having around 7 starters missing? I don't think it is. If the case is that we should rotate the squad more, well then we are also saying that the many injuries are somehow Reja's fault? I don't think we can be that simplistic.

Which are the 7 starters? Marchetti, Dias, Brocchi, Mauri....and?
Biava and Brocchi are 35 going on 36 and is expected that they can't be fit 100% of the time (if he gets 50% fit time we should be lucky). Bizzari, Dias, Matuzalem, Mauri are also 30+ so of course they will get injured more often.  Rocchi and Klose are stronger but still, I would expect them to mis at least 10-20% of the games on injuries...
So I think our injury problem is more a squad average age problem. We've chosen so far for a model in which we get experienced players and not invest in hot prospects/youngsters. And this is not wrong. If you look in Serie A the teams that have a higher average age than us are Juve, Milan and Napoli, which are exactly our contenders. So this model works in Serie A.
To go forward we can either buy more experienced players so that we have at least 2 good trustful squads which we can rotate or we can start buying younger players who will learn from the experienced ones (but remember that this takes time so expect at least 3-4 seasons of being anonymous in serie A and europe - the same way Udinese was for years and Inter is this season).

Dr. Bianchini said we wouldn't rush anyone back, which I think is an important statement to make since Marchetti has the exact same injury as Mauri and we know what happened to Mauri when he came back too early...

drazvan has a point, our guys are not in the best condition anyway and are performing beyond their age. If you look at the other teams that have been in crisis, they tend to have an average age as high as ours. Milan struggle to get anyone fit for any games, for example.
