Title: Top 5 favorite player in recent years
Post by: torsten on August 22, 2017, 05:35:30 PM
This has probably been a topic thats been around here a couple of times before.. but hey

Would be nice to hear some of you guys favorite players, and why they stuck with you. Me personally fell in love with both Couto and Nesta very quick! The longhair was just perfect

Stefano Fiore, just look at that name! And he was a great players to!  :sciarpa05:

Tommaso Rocchi, i mean, he was just the perfect player for a team like ours in the situation we were in!

And maybe one of the players that just amazed me so much together with Nesta ofc, is Beppe Biava. Just this HUGE football brain on the pitch, just knew how to read the game. Perfect defender really!

Mihajlovic
Klose
Mauri
Veron
Stankovic
Fiore
Pancaro (because once I spoke to him on Lazio Style Radio )
Rocchi

Can't really put only five names there!

There is always room for another favourite or worst topic!
(note: Maki is on a whole different level so I won't need to mention him in this top five!)

It depends how far back you go, you've mentioned Couto and Nesta so I will start then and it would be far too easy to fill a top five just from that era alone. At that time Juan Veron was my favourite, he was a wizard and I was so happy when we got him and it was a real shame that he only stayed two seasons. A player who's impression grew and grew on me was Diego Simeone. Some English fans hated him at the time because of the Beckham stuff at the World Cup '98, but there was no way something like that could affect my opinion! He was such a tough and whole hearted warrior and the incredible run of headed goals to help tie up the Scudetto were just brilliant. Obviously that whole team warrant special places for us all and could make a top ten alone... but I won't!

Just missing our glory year was the rock Angelo Peruzzi and he'd be my next choice. A legend and still one of the best goalkeepers in Serie A even later in his career.

From the Lotito era Tommaso Rocchi would be first choice, a true legend and our best striker for many years. His partnership with Pandev was one of the best we've had and he lead us through some tough times. Next would be Cristian Brocchi, the ultimate competitor with a huge heart and the one player I am most happy to say proved me wrong. When Matuzalem injured him and finished his career it was one of the bitterest moments following Lazio.

Top 5:

Diego Simeone
Tommaso Rocchi
Juan Veron
Cristian Brocchi
Angelo Peruzzi
+ Marcelo Salas... just because he needs to be there!

I could probably write a different list with some other iconic players from our past but I've decided to keep it to players I've actually seen.

1. Beppe Signori
2. Alessandro Nesta
3. Marcelo Salas
4. Alen Boksic
5. Stefano Fiore

Angelo Peruzzi - Obvious reasons, hes a legend, was an amazing goalkeeper and personally I dont feel weve had the stability since he retired.

Stefano Fiore - Loved his passion and the fact that he gave 100% all the time, and on a footballing level im a fan of midfielders who can play anywhere

Stefano Mauri - Alltime favourite, underrated by most laziali, and definitely underrated by football fans in general. Could play anywhere, incredibly vision and skill, and a lot of his work went unnoticed.

Claudio Lopez - Just a great striker, fast, great finisher

Alessandro Nesta - not sure I need a reason!

Stefano Fiore - His name is almost identical to mine, and obviously as a kid this kind of thing makes somebody into your favourite player. Was a little young to really recognize how good he was, but I remember he scored a lot, including three over the two Coppa final legs in 2004 against Juve, the highlights of which I used to get up super early before school to see on Euronews  :sciarpa05:

Tomasso Rocchi - The real MVP when I really started watching Lazio properly, as up until then the internet and streaming matches was not really possible. Really was the striker we needed at the time, though not as highly regarded as Pandev. We could probably still do with him to partner Ciro up top.

Cristian Ledesma - Scored the first ever goal that I ever saw in a Live derby, that ridiculous curvy shot from about 400 yards out.  Also, gotta love those players who come out of absolutely nowhere and become one of the best midfielders in the league.

Miroslav Klose - In all sense of the word, a legend. Delighted to have had him represent our club, especially with him having come in at a relatively old age and still being able to give us some of his best years. That 93rd minute derby winner doesn't do him any harm either

Stefano Mauri - Again, one of those guys with the same name as me... But this was more performance based. The man was a ****ing beast for us for years, best captain we've had in recent years. Work rate was phenomenal. My personal pick at number 1. Legend.

The 90s feels like ages ago, I thought it was recent years as in the last 5 years max

But ok in recent years I will say Mauri, Rocchi, Ledesma, Lulic and Brocchi

If we're talking all the way back to 90s

Peruzzi, Mihajlovic, Veron, Simeone and Crespo. Yes by now you're wondering why Nesta isn't there, I'll keep that to myself because otherwise I will derail the thread

From the recent years I choose Radu, Lulić, Mauri, Klose and Brocchi. These are my favorite players from the last decade.

And I won't make a 90s list, because it's impossible to include only five names

If we are talking recent as in actually recent, then it would be Lulic, Mauri, Floccari, Gonzalez and Biava.

If I was to go back a bit further, Fiore and Castroman would be candidates. Further again, and our current manager, Conceicao and Almeyda are in the reckoning.

Nesta - the last bandiera

Mancini - he get me my only scudetto as a fans, so far that is

Klose - The great gentleman

Salas - the matador

in the last years ....

Klose, Lulic, Mauri, Felipe Anderson, Brocchi

more years back...
Gazza (he was the reason why i became Lazio fan)
Nesta (my all time idol) - my all time favorite player
Fiore
Simeone / Sinisa Mijajlovic
Casiraghi
even if he is now a Juventino - with Nedved we had one of the best players of the whole world in our squad. A very complete player - who decided many derbies too!!

Surely recent years doesn't include the 90's but I won't complain

Recent favourite players would be;

Makinwa - Self explanatory
Klose - Great striker and behaved impeccable on an off the field
Rocchi - Just the perfect striker for us in the right time
Ledesma - A pleasure to watch on the pitch, great vision
Biava - A beast who proceed evveryones expectations

If we include the 90's;

Casiraghi - Together with Nesta the biggest reason why I fell in love with Lazio. A beautiful striker
Nesta - Best defender of all time I've watched football
Mancini - A genius on the field with technique to make me sweat. Back-heel flick goal from a corner against Parma will stick in my memory forever!
Marchegiani - Peruzzi who? This guy was just awesome
Last one is difficult, can't chose between Simeone, Veron and Stankovic.

Lulic, Alvaro Gonzales, Rocchi, Claudio Lopez, Mihajlovic

Mihajlovic has been one guy responsible I started taking notes when Lazio play and regularly looking after results on Monday morning newspaper (when Lazio matches wouldn't be live on TV). He's bit dirty and cunning to the level of nastiness, but without it he wouldn't be champion. Not superstar, but champion.

Claudio Lopez and Alvaro Gonzales as humble and working guys, in different roles, but more or less similar in thinking about football and both gave their piece of lazialita when here.

Rocchi was reference point since Lotito took over the club and I clearly believe he always had lot of ambition and if twist of fate didn't show up in Beijing 2008 he would end at Inter much before he eventually finished, perhaps just for Inter CL run 2010. He had qualities, he had ambition and he always put maximum effort on pitch.

Lulic - no reason to explain  - he's simply laziale with ambition, work ethic, qualities and will to be here.

There are still player who where near making top 5, but still deserve honorable mentioning like Biava, Mauri, Scaloni.

Are we talking favourite players for their meaning to the club or favourite players in terms of how they play.

In one list I'd have guys like Hernanes, Veron, Ledesma, Mauri and in the other I'd have people like Firmani and Scaloni.

Someone like Biava or Rocchi is a gem that fits both categories.

This morning I set off to court and on other side of street man was riding the bike in opposite direction and coming my way, in suspicious sea blue shirt. After he passed, turned around to see Mihajlovic 11. He then left bycicle to enter hardware shop and on chest - Siemens and Scudetto sign on right side. Almost forgot where I have to go.

Happy Lazio to all forum members and all Laziali.

Did you see Sinisa or someone wearing his jersey? My nostalgic jersey is the one with CIRIO on the chest, I had one (Salas 9) when I was 10 years old, I got bigger, gave it to my brother n now it's gone.

My top five favorite Lazio players in recent years : Miroslav Klose - Lucas Biglia - Stefano Mauri - Cristian Ledesma - Giuseppe Biava

A few days ago, an italian guy visiting Paris (the not very touristic far east of the city) was amazed to see a parisian guy wearing the 2014/15 away Lazio jersey. He tried to grab his attention by yelling :"Laziale" !
I was the guy wearing the Lazio jersey, and I went to him to discuss calcio. We got on well since he told me he was an Interista !

I have a colleague at work who is from Rome originally, funny thing is that, he is a Milanista, it came from his father.
Anyway, he had a friend who used to be a Lazio Primavera and shared some inside info. Basically Nedved was a piece of selfish shiet, who did not give a damn about anything but himself, on the other hand Luca Marchegiani had been a real gentleman, really great with everyone, from staff to to all the Primavera kids.
Also, the reason we got rid of Gottardi and Jugovich, is because they were fuk buddies.  :rolley:

I remember Nedved being a world class player who always gave everything on the pitch. I don't put him at the number one spot, which I think he would have deserved based on quality alone, because he has become more juventino than laziale.

Nevertheless, he was sold because Lazio was going bankrupt. I don't remember him being eager to leave in any way and at his first game at Lazio with Juventus he came to salute the crowd.

Also, when I hear something negative from someone who knows someone who I never met about someone I don't personally know, I always take it with a pinch of salt.

Interesting topic. So many to choose from.  Lately I haven't had many. Maybe as I have gotten old and players are younger than me. I will try.

1. Rocchi
2. Mauri
3. Fiore
4. Biava
5. Cesar

Peruzzi could have been near, but he was an injury disaster. Hitzlsperger was a "huge" contributor for us. The only Pride participant in Lazio history.

Could have been many else, but those are 5 I remember well. Especially number 3 made me happy when he played.

Rocchi, Klose, Stam, Ciro, Favalli (i start from season 2003/04 until now, no order everyone has been pure magic and firework at us) maybe someone will debate Stam but i watched him live at Stadio Olimpico, Lazio - Sampdoria back in feb, 2004 and he was so great, long time since i saw a defender dominate so much. And it was my first trip to Rome aswell.. It was a sunny sunday afternoon and almost 40,000 spectators attended that game.. Fiore scored for us but Samp did 1-1 and that was final score.. very great memory personally for me.

I know this isnt really the right topic, but since we were talking of favourite players in recent history, obviously we mention the less successful ones.

Today this page has printed their "Flop 11" of players from 1990-2004

http://www.machenesanno.it/la-flop-11-della-lazio-dal-1990-al-2004/ (http://www.machenesanno.it/la-flop-11-della-lazio-dal-1990-al-2004/)

Its all in Italian, so apologies to most of you, but you get the idea!

Mendieta is definitely the biggest flop in recent times. I feel weird about talamonti  and lequi being mentioned there, they were brought in during a very chaotic time when the club barely escaped bankruptcy.

De la Pena definitely a flop too. And you could also add Claudio Lopez on the list. He had some good times with us, but never found the form he had at Valencia imo.

Edit: actually it may be harsh to use the word flop to describe Claudio Lopez time at Lazio, but he did leave a lot to be desired sometimes.

I'm sure we discussed a 'bad XI' before and if I can find the thread, I'll merge this discussion into it (edit: topic isn't quite the same, I'll just leave it here).

Claudio Lopez definitely wasn't the same player for us that he was for Valencia and as much as he's lauded here, Stam was nowhere near the player for Lazio that he was prior. I wouldn't put either in a team like this, but in terms of falling short of personal expectations, both did, for sure.

I wouldn't have some of these names on this team because they surpassed expectations. A 'flop' for me is a player like Mendieta clearly was, someone who just doesn't meet what fans would have anticipated or what the price for the time suggested we should see on the field.

I agree with Mendieta but can't with Lopez. OK he was not what it was with Valencia but he delivered when needed. I think Kovačevič who came from Juve was much worse. Also our experiments with Cisse, Muzzi..., didn't work out and they are way ahead of Lopez.

Muzzi came to Lazio in his 30s off the back of a poor season with Udinese - I think that move worked out as well as it could possibly have all things considered. And Cissť did a job which still divides fans, and he was practically a free transfer given we got back what we paid for him.

Definitely agree on Kovacevic being underwhelming. And to boot, he effectively ended our last Champions League run, which doesn't make me look kindly on him.

one thing is, when we buy people like AC Milan just did, it's hard to settle and maybe Mendieta and others suffered from that (I haven't started watching football back then so I can't say it's definite). Another thing is some players were never given a proper chance to integrate, an example is Luis Alberto was only given sparing minutes last season and no one appreciated him, and impressed only when given appropriate chances.

Real flops are Djordjevic and even Hoedt who I don't rate highly, despite support from the manager and club.

It is very tough to choose between all our players in recent years. And recent years is not a defined time so if we are talking about 10 years back then there are much more than 5 players I would choose.

Radu, Lulic, Ledesma, Mauri and Rocchi. But there are also Klose, Hernanes, Muslera, Parolo...
